Description

A project, where the main focus is connecting travelers with each other and the city. AeroGuest holds a lot of data, about the guests where there is a potential upside in connecting the travelers with the community in the city and other travelers.

My role in this project, was to find potential ways to let the guests engage with the city they are visiting. In order to fullfill that goal, extensive research was made, to dig out the users pain points, workshop was made, and idea was validated and tested.

Context

During the 4. Semester of multimedia design, I did spent my time at AeroGuest APS in Aarhus. AeroGuest is a software company which strive to digitalize the hotel experience. With an app the guests can check-in unlock doors, check-out and pay for their stay. I had the pleasure to be a part of a new product, where the problem statement was: How can AeroGuest absorb and retain the modern traveler and inspire the guest to engage with the experiences of the hotel, the local community, nature and the city as a whole.

It was a truly exciting time, where I learned a lot about research, complex software, dealing with different kind of customers and designing for the mobile app interface. A direction of the project, it was my task as in intern to find a possible way, to implement the direction set by the leaders of the company. As it is a project, that is still under development I can not explain a case study in detail, but feel free to head out to Kasper Tikær, who was my mentor on the project and currently product designer b2c at AeroGuest.

What is eternity?

Eternity, a widely used word. Barely known to the deep extend by the most. The project was about eternity. How we chose to interpret it, was not the case. But we had the challenge to explore the concept of eternity

"I feel scared but optimistic"

To get a thorough understand of, what eternity means to people, and more specifically leaving a mark means, we made a questionnaire, we did send around to family and friends.  Being a team of 5 people, with 5 different nationalities and 5 different cultures, we gathered some interesting insights.

The concept of eternity is vague to the people we asked. A lot of different interpretations are common when talking about eternity.  Another aspect from the survey is that, the asked people feel very small, when asked about the concept of eternity, insignificant, meaningless etc.

Idea development

In order to get some ideas, we did an idea generating workshop, where we ended up with 4 interesting ideas. You can see each of the in the gallery below. We ended up choosing the idea of leaving a mark, since we could see desirebility and feasibility in the idea

In order to get a closer understanding of the idea, we developen a user flow on how we thought the solution could look like.

Done with user research?

We had one challenge to face. We did not know, what stuff people would like to upload on legacy Bank. What heritage would they like to leave as a mark? Why and how.

We decided to do interviews with students at the university. International  studients, with different nationalities and backgrounds.

The results were a bit surprising. The intention behind leaving a mark, was different from interests to interests. As students from a graphic design course we made the mistake, that thinking everyone had a desire to leave some art, design or personal stuff. But it was not givin that way. Some wanted to leave clothes, some sound, video, recepies, a pan, a pen etc.

A way to overcome, but also limit the upload options, were to select what the users can upload.

In the process of designing the website, we made some wireframes,  we decided to test those, to see how the user flow and UI stick together. You can read the responses below

Final design

Leaving a Mark

Leaving a mark is the center of Legacy Bank. How to make sure to be remembered personally, was the main challenge we had to solve.

As the user, who wants to leave a mark, there are some things to consider. First of all the why, which is a personal issue and matter. To whom you would like to leave it to, is another consideration. We decided to send an email with a link to legacy Bank, to the ones it matter.

The last thing is what to upload. Since it is a website. The year was 2021-2022 we chose to limit uploads to digital uploads only. Therefore it is not possible to leave a pan or some clothes, to the next generations.

How to inspire

The vision of Legacy Bank is to give a fair chance at safely preserving your heritage in a poetic and unique way for each person. It is an individual decision to make if the heritage is going to be visible to other or private.

If you decided to publish your heritage to the public, the heritage will be stored safely in the Legacy Bank. Below you can see a gif on how to browse through heritages.

Reflection on the project

Personally, I’ve enjoyed working on this project. It was fun to work on a project, that was that broad and so many people had different understandings of what Eternity means.

It was also interesting to work in a group, where every group member comes from a different culture. With group members from 5 different countries and social layers. We managed to get the group working together pretty good.

It was also a good working experience to be in a group of highly skilled students regarding graphic design disciplines. I learned a lot, from observing and listening, and I also felt I brought something to the table regarding UX design and web-design.

Waitlist website

I designed and developed a waitlist website to gather potential leads for Catery, a platform tailored for food truck owners to streamline their event planning. The branding is inspired by the perspective grid and tiles commonly seen in a restaurant kitchen, which brings a sense of familiarity and professionalism to the site. I focused on a minimalistic style, ensuring that the interface is clean and intuitive. The visual elements, such as the cohesive color scheme, modern typography, and strategic use of white space, help in effectively communicating the key areas where Catery can assist food truck owners.

Booking form

Working on editing the booking form, so dates, budget, persons and location are gathered in the booking process. The data should be visible during the checkout process and visible for both user groups when a transaction has been placed. 

I am storing the data in the API, where i get the data in thee transaction process. The form is made in React final form, and JSX elements. You can see designs below.

Listing creation

A catering provider should be able to create and update their listing. The listing should contain, general information such as title, description, photos & category of food. 
Moreover the company have to set some limitations on distance they want to travel for an order. That will be done in the location field, where they input their address, set a limit of km they want to travel. The boundary limitations should then be calculated through Google Maps API, which generates a distance between A and B. That result will then indicate if the listing can be ordered at the location the customer choose.

They should also be able to provide their menu, with description and a possible price, so the customer can get an indication of a price per item in the menu. The price field, wont be required since some of the catering companies are doing a fixed catering-menu.

Books a reference list

I am genuinely interested in platforms. I am quite fascinated how a product can be able to attract two different parties, transact and exchange goods or service leaving both parties in a better position as before, levering the already exciting components and utilities. To get a better understanding of the synergies in platforms and marketplaces I have read a few books on the topics. One of the first books i read was We-economy by Peter Hesseldahl. A short book that introduces the reader to the concept of platforms and sharing economy. 


The book made me further interested in the topic, and I bought Platform revolution and Business of Platforms. Two great books that have the reputation of being the bibles to platform economy books. 
The last book I read about the topic is Platform Strategies which gives a further insight in practical guides to value mapping, pricing and chicken-egg strategies. I can recommend.

The challenge

Create a way for students and employers to meet. It is a project of exploration” The challenge context should be explored through the perspectives of different stakeholders: students at the department , future employers, and the internship coordinator.

MY TAKE

I saw this challenge as truly exciting. As I have interests in platforms, technology and how to bring people together. A fun project in sight.

KICKOFF

At the outset of the project we didn’t have a clear mission or specific goals for the matching experience. Without pre-existing insights, we started to interview students and future employers. I had the role of being the interviewer on approx 50% of the interviews we conducted

Poorly individualized job-portals cause “failed employments”

The current platforms are made out for a process where the recruitment spent the time on reading CV and transcripts. But that is not the case for digital product oriented jobs. The current platforms fail to deliver the most important knowledge on both sides.
How might we, with a new job-portal targeted product oriented candidates and companies increase credibility in the hiring process?
This begged the question, how might we, with a new job-portal targeted product oriented candidates and companies increase credibility in the hiring process? Our proposal was Jobtern, a job-portal created on behalf of companies and candidates.

To sort out which direction we had to go we made an impact-effort matrix

The matrix should help us with where to put our energy and effort. It helped us  align our mental models, and build a common ground

Design

My professional opinion is, that research and test i crucial to the development of the concept and product
Therefore we tested out solution early on to learn if we were on the right path.
We tested the solution on 5 students, where we wanted to learn, what was important for them to know, when applying for jobs and internship. In the test we also had a useability test regarding uploading a portfolio and applying for a job
But, was this the actual test we had to make this early? The results from the test were sadly expected, the test respondents did the test too well and no surprises.

With some research and a test we sat down to narrow the concept even more

Get seen as candidate

As result of the research, we concluded that a portfolio is the singlest most important factor to get hired as a candidate. At the same time, the candidates want to express themselves in a personal matter on the platform.

With that in mind, we had to find a solution where candidates can show their work, but also a solution where the companies can filter and find relevant projects and candidates.

We came up with a solution, where you as a candidate have each of your projects in your “portfolio” under your profile. In that way it is possible to filter between projects and find relevant people to your company.

To increase the credibility, we made an option, where you can add team members to your projects. With that in place, the recruiter can see based on the portfolio project, what work the specific candidate has done in the project.

Finding the right candidate

A big challenge from the companies are the amount of time recruiting a new candidate. Some companies are having an active approach to hiring candidates. Looking at Linked-in, hosting case competitions etc. Other a more passive approach.

With the profile and projects in order, the recruiters can use those to sort and filter between candidates. In that way candidates can be visible with the relevant info for companies. A step before their existent
approach.

Testing

Is it the right solution?

Personally I think user testing and concept validation is a truly important topic, when designing new concepts.

Therefore we decided to do a user test. The test included 4 different tasks, including a question about the filtering options.

The complexity of the filtering option for candidates surprised us, and there is plenty room for improvement here.

Data structure

As a student with with an interest in technology and design. To be aligned with developers and understand digital products I see as an important skill.

Therefore I created this data tree on the concept. How the data will get send around, and how the job-portal can be designed.

Retroperspective

Jobtern was an exciting project, where I had the oppurtunity to learn even mor about the complexity of designing platforms. In the group we managed to create a good product, that did not had to be pixel perfect but had a direction and a goal.
How might we, with a ned job-portal targeted product oriented candidates and companies increase credibility in the hiring process
We managed to create a job-portal where we could increase the credibility on both sides in the hiring process. We did that, by including candidate profiles and project together with an “add team member” the recruiter can see what and why the specific candidate has done in each project.
Validation of the concept is tough a point, where we could have done better. Jobtern is a big platform, with many features. Too many? In the rush of finishing the project, we did not test the most important thing, would people use the platform as designed? on a retrospective note, we should definitely have done some concept validation.
